Stan Schertzer was born in 1952 in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. He started piano lessons at the age of 6 with Joseph Saia, followed by Mark Gilbert at his home in Newton, MA. His 4th grade chosen instrument was the violin. When Stan's violin teacher Miss White told him he was going to have to choose between the violin or the piano, we're glad he chose the latter. Stan then studied at the New England Conservatory of Music with Reginald Hashay. He continued his music lessons with Mel Springer, who became a big influence on his performance career. Through Mel's urging, Stan was playing at the Chateau Garad Lounge in Newton at the age of 16. He instantly became hooked!
Stan's talent on the piano was evident throughout his high school years working with his fellow students who were auditioning for the school musicals. Stan spent two years at the ivories with The Greater Bostonians, a regional high school musical group consisting of a full orchestra and chorus performing for numerous television and live performances throughout the New England area. That was the turning point for him.
After high school Stan attended Berklee College of Music receiving a bachelor's degree in composition. He played in many bands after college, too numerous to name. Currently playing with his own group Key Winds Duo and the SMS Jazz Project. His love of composition led to many arranging gigs. Since 1998, Stan has been the music arranger/director for Cantor Jodi Schechtman's Cantor's Concerts at Temple Beth Am in Framingham, Ma. Simultaneously with this lifestyle, Stan enjoys teaching private piano and composition lessons. The current writing project was one of his favorites. Stan has composed unique new music for some of the traditional Shabbat evening liturgy adding a contemporary sound to the harmonies and melodies.
When Stan isn't playing the piano or writing beautiful melodies, he enjoys sailing, motor scooting, street biking and kayaking. He lives in Central Mass with his adorable wife Jo and their pets, Swezey Rose and Fiona Rose. Stan and Jo have four children and 8 beautiful grand children.
